Euchre Strategy

Euchre is a game of good bidding and knowing your trump. These fundamentals win far more hands than luck does.

1. Count your trump honestly

Before you name trump, count your likely tricks. A good rule of thumb: order up when you hold three or more trumps, or two strong trumps including a bower. Remember the left bower counts as trump — players forget it and under-bid.

2. Respect the dealer's up-card

If you order up the dealer, you're handing your opponent a free trump card. Only order up the dealer's suit when your own hand is strong. Conversely, as the dealer you gain that card — factor it in when your partner or an opponent orders it up to you.

3. Go alone when you can sweep

Going alone scores 4 points for all five tricks — a game-winning swing. Go alone when you hold the right bower plus high trump and few or no off-suit losers. If even one off-suit card is likely to lose a trick, take the safer 1–2 points with your partner.

4. Lead trump as the maker

When you've called trump and hold the bowers, lead trump to pull it out of opponents' hands. This protects your off-suit Aces on later tricks and stops opponents from trumping them.

5. Play defense to euchre them

When the other side names trump, your job is to steal 3 tricks and score 2 points for the euchre. Lead your off-suit Aces early before they can be trumped, keep your trump to capture the makers' winners, and trust your partner to cover the suits you can't.
