This is the classic two-player game, played to 100 points: Eights cost 50 to be caught holding, Kings, Queens and Jacks 10, Aces 1 and every other card its face value. When the stock runs out the discards are shuffled into a new one, and a hand where neither player can move is scored on the cards in hand. It is quick to learn, quick to play, and the computer opponent — three levels, from a loose Easy to a Hard that counts the suits you have drawn on — keeps it honest.

Frequently asked questions

What does an 8 do in Crazy Eights?

An Eight is wild. You may play it on any card, whatever the suit or rank, and you then name the suit the next player must follow. Being caught with an Eight in your hand at the end of a hand costs 50 points, so hold it for when you are stuck — or to switch the suit away from your opponent.

Do you draw one card or draw until you can play?

In the classic rules used here you draw one card at a time from the stock until you draw a card you can play, which you may play at once. You may also choose to draw even when you hold a playable card. You may only pass when the stock is completely empty and you have no legal card.

Can I play Crazy Eights alone?

Yes — that is what this page is for. It is you against the computer, which plays a proper game at three difficulty levels. There is no need for a second person, no sign-up and nothing to download.

How is Crazy Eights scored?

When a player goes out, they score the value of the cards left in the opponent's hand: 50 for each Eight, 10 for each King, Queen or Jack, 1 for each Ace and face value for the rest. If the stock is empty and neither player can play, the hand is blocked and the player with the lower total scores the difference. The first to 100 points wins the game.

What happens when the stock runs out?

The discard pile, all but its top card, is shuffled to form a new stock and play continues. If there is still nothing to draw and a player cannot play, they pass; two passes in a row end the hand, which is scored on the cards in hand.
